The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.
"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.
Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
