Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Officers state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Police then discovered many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report early analysis show the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; authorities are presently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they added.
City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
An important political figure stated the vandalism rendered him stunned and needed to be solved promptly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing attack five years ago," he stated on online, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
